OUR FIRST STEP IS AN ASSESSMENT
The first meeting with your child, we will assess the five areas of reading development: vocabulary,
phonics decoding, reading fluency, comprehension and writing skills.
We will gather background information from the parent and the child through a reading and writing Interest Inventory. This information coupled with formal assessments will determine his/her strengths and areas needed for growth. From there, we will formulate detailed goals and objectives through a Learner Assessment Profile. This profile is specific to your child's needs.

VOCABULARY- WORD WORK

Our lessons will be divided into three parts: vocabulary, reading and writing. During the lesson, your child will:
1.Read at his/her instructional level
2. Write to support attainment of outcomes
3.Apply skills in context
The phonics objectives will be part of the word work section, which we'll cover the first 15-20 minutes of our lesson. Explicit teaching of phonics strategies will be implemented using a multi-sensory approach to learning.

READING & COMPREHENSION

The second part of our lesson will focus on the reading process. Before reading, we'll activate prior knowledge, so your child can make connections to the text. Your child will learn guided reading strategies to help with decoding and understanding of vocabulary and text. During reading, your child will learn a variety of strategies for decoding, building fluency and comprehension. After reading, comprehension questions will be modeled for understanding of explicit and implicit questioning. We'll use a wide range of narrative and expository text, using graphic organizers for specific text structures. Most importantly, your child will be paired with interest level books to increase their desire and love of reading.

THE WRITING PROCESS
Developing Skilled Writers
"For developing writers, it's helpful to teach them a process, with the knowledge that over time they will adapt what you've taught them and will develop a process that works for them personally."
Jennifer Serravallo

THE READING LAB
In addition to leveled readers and books, the children will learn through games, letter tiles, dry erase boards, sentence strips, cards, magnetic letter tiles, anchor charts, multi-sensory sand writing and graphic organizers.
